The film was released in March of 1991 and went on to gross only one million dollars atbox office but only available in limited release. The film was used by the director (Carew) to showcase up and coming black stand up talent such as Lawrence and expose this group to a national audience. The film was generally panned by critics and is still panned by critics today although there is a cult-like following of the movie thanks to airings on cable networks like HBO, Cinemax, and BET.
The film was shot on location in the Los Angeles are in California due to the low budget the cast and crew had to shoot the film. Many critics point out that just by watching and observing the movie one can tell that the movie was a low budget affair.
Synopsis
Stand up comedian Terry (Lawrence) is a local funny man who is in a lot of trouble. He can't pay his $67 phone bill. He drives a car that has only one gear, reverse. He is struggling trying to make it at a local comedy club called Dukie's. He is messing around with the owner's wife in an attempt to get more attention at the club. It turns out that the owner, Dukie, is trying to hook up with the star attraction of his club, Aretha. Aretha is a self-important diva, the kind of empowered, uplifted black woman who feels secure in her abilities and possibilities and she has a huge boyfriend who promises to hurt anybody he catches laughing at his love. What follows is a night of comedy, romance, comedy, action, comedy, and Terry achieving his initial goal: getting $67 dollars to pay his phone bill.Tagline
