This one painting has created ripples in the calcutta Art Circle. It was used by the largest selling Bengali daily Ananda Bazar Patrika in itc cover page. Yet the subsequent write ups in the newpaper could not place the painting in any particular genre of art.
Sumeet Mukherjee, Art Critic had even identified the art-work with that of Hussain's Mother -teresa series. The comparision is falacious as neither the two styles are sismilar, nor is Hussai's work shows the use of colour in any experimental style. Ray's work is purely an experimentation in colours which is very rare these days.
Among all the art-works of Devajyoti Ray, 'In Despair' probably stands out as his best work till date. The painiting was also shown in New Delhi's Lalit Kala Academy and then at a Street show in Bombay's Chowpati. It recieved immense response from the new students of art colleges.
Whether Pseudorealism, continues to rule realm of 21st century ideas, is to be revealed only in course of time. But Ray's 'In Despair' has already made a place for itself as one of the best Indian paintings of all times.
