She was born in Forest Gate, Essex (although most biographical sources indicate London). She had a long career on the English stage and screen, ranging from a role in the chorus of Charlot's revue in 1925 to ''Charlie Girl'' in 1965 and ''My Fair Lady'' in 1979.
In British films, she played everything from Queen Victoria to war heroine, Odette Hallowes.
Virtually all of her films were directed and produced by Herbert Wilcox, who became her husband in 1943. They remained together until his death in 1977.
She was created a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1952, and raised to Dame Commander (DBE) in 1969.
She died after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, aged 81, in Surrey, England, UK.
