Militants ban dating in Manipur restaurants
Discusses how a rebel group in Manipur and other pressure groups are imposing a ban on dating in restaurants and marriages outside the community. The group says restaurants that have dimly lit private cabins are “encouraging pre-marital sex” among young lovers. Not suprisingly the article goes on to report that the ban has angered young couples, but fear of reprisal prevents them from speaking out. One college girl in Imphal did speak out however, saying “It is wrong to presume that someone sitting in a private cabin in a restaurant would indulge in sex. There could be one or two cases, but to generalise that all couples make love in a cafe is nonsense.”
