NetImperative: Guardian takes dating service online
There have been takeovers and acquisitions galore over the past few weeks in the cyber dating world.
Less than a month ago DatingDirect.com the UK’s largest online dating site, became the exclusive dating partner for itv.com.
YooMedia, the interactive TV content company recently acquired UK dating brands - Dateline, Club Sirius and Jiles Limited in am attempt to get control over the daters dollar online and offline.
Guardian Newspapers will take its ‘Soulmates’ dating service online next week. The launch comes on the back of its existing telephone dating service in conjunction with automated service provider, Telecom Express, and follows a recent surge in UK activity for services providing romance via the internet.
Head of enterprise at the Guardian, Kate Morgan-Locke said: “The site is a new concept in online dating, rather than joining up with an existing dating site we are building a database from scratch. The design and editorial of the site has been developed by Guardian Unlimited enabling us to create a high quality, trusted site, which is a true extension of the newspapers.”
Membership of the site is free, however in order to speak with other users, a three-day guest subscription will cost ?4.95; a one-month subscription will cost ?16.95; with three months costing ?29.95. It would be like avoiding a cover charge at a local bar by not being permitted to speak unless spoken to first.
